Alfred Clover
2960 Alfred Wingrove Clover enlisted at Chatham on June 6th, 1850. He was wounded in the
right hand at Delhi, 14 September 1857, and later invalided to Europe and discharged in 1859.
He served in No 3. Coy during the siege of Delhi and received 1 share shares of the prize
money which amounted to 86 Rupees.
He was born in the parish of St. Andrews near London on Dec 5th, 1831 and was christened on
January 1st, 1832 with his parents listed at William George Clover and Rosanna.
1861 Census: Alfred was living in Westminster, London, with his widowed mother, Rosanna
(House Keeper - 60), and the following siblings: William (Linen Draper - 32); Sarah A (Linen
Assistant - 26) & Rosanna (Linen Assistant - 21). His given profession is that of a "Cigar
Maker".He married Mary Ann Slitters in Southwark on May 22nd 1865 and later census
returns show her as a cigar maker also.
Alfred Clover died at Holborn sometime during the third quarter of 1890 aged 58.
In the Times Nov 17, 1863 reference is made to Clover assaulting a woman and earning 6 mos
imprisonment with hard labour. Many years later, the court pages tell of him being mugged by
a couple of teenagers.
