Richard Perry Wells Hunter was born in
Glasgow on April 30th 1878. He enlisted in the
first battalion of the Gordons in November of
1898. Drummer Hunter was wounded at
Doornkop in May 1900.
Following the battle of Doornkop the Gordons
and the Royal Canadian Regt became
particularly close. I have in my possession a
group picture of soldiers from both regiments
posing after the battle. It may have been this
connection which led to Hunter's later
emigration to Canada.
Glasgow on April 30th 1878. He enlisted in the

Following the battle of Doornkop the Gordons
and the Royal Canadian Regt became

connection which led to Hunter's later
emigration to Canada.
He married Georgina Dadie on Dec 27, 1901 and they had a daughter Violet who was born on April 28, 1904 in Hawick.
He enlisted in the 2nd CEF on July 16th, 1915. At the time, he gives his year of birth as 1881. His next of kin was his wife
Georgina and at the time, they lived in Kingston. On Oct 1st , 1918 he attested to the CSEF this time giving his year of birth as
1878. He disembarked at Vladvostock in Jan 1919 and returned to Canada in April of that year. QMS Hunter was discharged in
Winnipeg on demobilization on April 20th, 1920.
He spent a fair amount of time in hospitals during his first tour of duty in the Great War mostly with trouble related to his
feet. The complaint started at the Somme in 1916.
He and Georgina appear as servants in Los Angeles in the 1930 Census. His employer was the well known hollywood producer of
the era, Ben P. Schulberg. (Son Budd wrote "on the waterfront")
He died on Jan 5, 1941 in Rosmead California, Georgina passed away on her 72nd birthday-April 6, 1958 also in California and
their daughter Violet died in Rosemead on Jan 4, 1995 in her 91st year.
