James Murray was born in May 1874 in Dufftown, Banffshire and gave his
trade as a farm servant when he signed up with the second battn. Gordon
Highlanders in Dublin on Aug. 23rd, 1892.
He was described as 5’9" weighing 128lbs with a fresh complexion. He had
lost the first joint of his ring finger on left hand. He transferred to the 1st
battn. In Sept. 1898 and was transferred to the reserve in Sept. 1899. He
rejoined the colours on mobilization on Oct 10th, 1899 and went to S. Africa
where he was wounded in the right forearm at Doornkop on May. 29th, 1900
He transferred back to the 2nd battn in Dec. 1901.
He left S. Africa in Jan. 1902 with the Battn to India and later transferred
to the A&SH in Aug. 1903. He was sent home a year later as an invalid unfit
for service.
He was MID 3/28/00 and appears on page 5950 of the LG dated 9/10/01
