Corporal R. Bracey
Meerut Light Horse
_________________________________________________________________________________
Little information is available regarding Corporal Bracey other than the
verification of his no clasp medal for the Indian Mutiny.  He was probably a
civilian who volunteered for the unit upon its formation in 1857 following the
start of the Mutiny.  According to the roll, only fifty-three medals, all
without clasps, were issued to members of the unit, making this a rare medal.
Corporal Bracey’s medal is officially impressed in the usual style for Mutiny
medals.

The medal roll for the Meerut Light Horse was not submitted to the Secretary
to the Government of India, Military Department until September of 1862,
when it was discovered that the Commanding Officer, (Local) Lieut. George
Pocock had not submitted the roll as required.  Entitlement for the Mutiny
medal for all of the individuals listed on the roll was for “services with the
column under Brigadier the Honorable P. Herbert, C.B., in the pursuit of
Ferozeshah, and engagement on the banks of the Jumna on the 10th December
1858.”  Two officers (a “local” lieutenant and a “local” cornet), eight serjeants
and two corporals are listed on the roll.

The Meerut Light Horse was disbanded in 1861 and the fifty-three medals
issued for the Indian Mutiny represent the only medals ever issued for the
unit.
